PhD Position in Interaction Systems

Learning analytics and privacy in digital education platforms

The Coordination and Interaction System Group (React) at EPFL has an open PhD position in Human Computer Interaction and Digital Education.

In the context of digital education in science and engineering, the React Group is designing, implementing and evaluating innovative social media platforms for collaborative learning and knowledge management (graasp.eu), as well as mobile apps (speakup.info).

Following the successful 13M€ FP7 Go-Lab European project offering rich open educational resources to educators (golabz.eu), the European Commission is now supporting Next-Lab, a 6M€ Horizon 2020 Innovation Action targeting very large scale adoption of digital education in Europe.

The main topic of the PhD will be related to Learning Analytics and Visualisation. It would alternatively also be possible to carry out investigations on the usage of blockchain for secure tracking and storage of interaction traces of learners across multiple educational cloud platforms.

The candidate should preferably hold a Master’s degree in a related field (computer science, computer or electrical engineering), have strong competencies in Web technologies, as well as skills or interest to develop competences in collaborative research and JavaScript programming. Fluency in English is required.

The successful candidate will be expected to publish research results, attend conferences and actively collaborate in the lab activities including interaction with master students and participation in teaching.

The position is expected to start at the end of 2017 or the beginning of 2018.

Candidates have to be accepted by either the EDIC or the EDEE doctoral programme, in which Dr. Gillet is an affiliated PhD advisor.
